DAYS 3 & 4 – Kien Giang & Ha Tien
The Distribution Team began Day 3 supplying food to 74 families that will last for 1 month. They also each got a bicycle so that they can get to school more efficiently and safely. Kien Giang is located very close to the Cambodian border and many children are illegally trafficked out of the country. The bikes will be an ENORMOUS asset to each family!
Over the 2 days, the medical team examined 550 people, and the Home team got a large portion of 2 homes built, and the completion of the homes should happen in the next two weeks! Since the Distribution Team worked so efficiently on Day 3, we were able to take a trip to Ha Tien which is another up and coming resort area and spend a few hours at the beach. Yes, I have my first sunburn on 2008!
The beach was gorgeous and we were even able to see Cambodia in the distance despite it being a bit hazy outside. During the trip to the beach we passed many homes built on the rivers (sometimes literally), and rural areas as well with water buffalo grazing in the fields!
After returning to Kien Giang, we met up with the Home and Medical Teams and set out for the next province Dong Thap. Along the way we again went through many urban areas which make our central city look immaculate! Many homes have grass roofs, and some are grass on all sides! One of the main problems in the area is the lack of running water since people are forced to use the local rivers for cooking, drinking, bathing and as general waste sites.
