DAY 7 – Back to Saigon!
We finished up in Dong Thap this morning after visiting one last school to distribute food and bikes. The students were incredible! They stormed us when we arrived and we felt like we were Hollywood stars trying to walk into a building. They gave many of our kids small gifts and had a great time practicing their English. Most were able to say, “What is your name?” but when we asked them their names, they just giggled. One girl, though, had a great conversation with Martha, one of our adult volunteers. She asked her about the New York Mets, and how she got to Vietnam. Martha explained that she flew on a plane and the girl wanted to clarify if it was a plane or a jet!” I think the kids are amazed with our light skin and also the size of our bodies! When we give them a sheet of stickers, they take a few off and stick them to our shirts. The Vietnamese people are so generous it is incredible!
We took the bus back to Saigon, but we have a 4th team that got there the hard way – they rode their bikes! As part of a fundraiser we had 6 bikes and 7 bikers who rotated throughout the 100 mile trip! They had a support van, but it was still in the 90’s outside with very high humidity. I saw them arrive this afternoon, but haven’t talked to many of them yet since they were a little tired!
